For the coming of the year 2000, Avignon was designated as one of the seven "European capitals of Culture", and many prestigious events were held there, attracting more people than ever, particularly during the festival. The Pieta exhibition was included by the municipality in the framework of events called "Avignon 2000" and thanks to them and to the archdiocese, who made available the superb Chapelle de l'Oratoire, it was presented throughout the summer in one of the city's most beautiful churches, 100 metres from the Place de l'Horloge and the Palais des Papes.

The organisation of the exhibition was delegated to the Acte I association, co-directed by Pierrick Longuèvre and Kadher Boulaouchine, which had for years been running the Théâtre des Roues in Avignon.

It was the exhibition in Avignon which provided the occasion for the creation of the Pieta de Michelangelo web site, thanks to EISTI, which is linked the IGS group, and thanks to the immediate personal interest and full involvement in the project of the school's charismatic founder and director, Nesim Fintz.

The web site was built by a mixed team including both students and Valéry Frémaux, the director of investigation in new information and communication technology at EISTI. This is a state registered engineering school based in Cergy, member of commission of France's top educational institutions, Les Grandes Écoles. For the last fifteen years this school has been training top level IT practitioners in the main areas of computer science such as finance, scientific calculation, artificial intelligence, new technology as well as classic information technology.

At the end of a visit to the exhibition made by all the personalities and guests, the web site itself was inaugurated in the great reception hall at the Town Hall, during a preview which was particularly rich. The Mayor, Madame Marie-Josée Roig, whose dedication to culture is well-know, and Monsieur Jacques Bérard, President of the General Council spoke very warmly, and then Monsignor Raymond Boucheix, the Archbishop of Avignon, gave a remarkable message on the spiritual dimension of Art. After votes of thanks from the organisers, Valery Frémaux concluded by presenting the site on a giant screen, explaining the main parts and the projected future developments, and then making himself available to the participants who wished to begin to use the site themselves.
