n this citadel, built by Vauban, which overlooks the whole of the Gironde estuary, the President of the General Council, Senator Philippe Madrelle wanted to bring together around Michelangelo's Pieta some of the best "Virgins of Pity", roman or gothic, from the region: those of Soussans, Gauriac and Bazas.

nd in the superb brochure produced for the occasion, Monsieur Madrelle wrote with reason: "These anonymous sculptures, so modest yet so beautiful, each has its place next to the representations of Michelangelo's Pieta, sharing as they do in the same imperious artistic need, through which humanity sublimates its fears and its hopes....The ensemble, I believe, there finds its unity".
