obert Hupka and his sister Marie were still teenagers when nazism and the war forced them to emigrate.

t was therefore with great joy that Robert Hupka saw the exhibition presented in his home town.

ienna, however, had other emotions in store for him. The Scottish Convent where the exhibition was held includes a school - the very school where Robert Hupka did all his studies.

nd on the opening day, in the presence of His Eminence the Cardinal Keonig, Peter Marboe, the city's cultural attaché, presented to Robert Hupka the Golden Medallion of the City of Vienna, in recognition of the influence of his work. Robert's sister, Marie, with whom he has always maintained close and deep ties, had come specially from London for the event.

he Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and one of the best known musical temples in the world, was hosting in parallel, thanks to the support of Doctor Biba, an exhibition of Robert Hupka's photographs of Toscanini.

wo people were of prime importance in the preparation of this exhibition: Doctor Sarolta Schredl, Director of Heritage Services at the Ministry of Culture, who had come to see the exhibition at the Sorbonne in Paris; and Doctor Arthur Saliger, Director of the Mediaeval Collections Department at the Belvedere Museum. Their smiling competence, and the efficiency of their teams, were the solution to many a problem.

ut the Vienna stage of the exhibition will be forever stamped with the active and influential presence of Monsignor Christoph Schönborn, Cardinal Archbishop of Vienna. For Robert Hupka and the organisers, this encounter was a veritable communion, by Michelangelo, through the Source of all beauty.
