obert Hupka did not think of publishing his photographs until 1972. In that year, on 21st May - at Whitsuntide - some 25 minutes before the midday papal benediction, a madman wickedly attacked the statue with a hammer, and before he could be stopped, hit it fifteen times. Some of the blows fell on the Virgin Mary's face, destroying the incomparable beauty created by Michelangelo.

obert Hupka was deeply upset by this attack. Not knowing at the time that the experts of the Vatican museum would be able to use all the resources of modern technology to restore the statue to a surprising degree of perfection, he decided to offer to everyone the beauty, which he had been given to contemplate. He selected 150 of his best reproductions, and made them into a wonderful little Italian style book, the first edition of which was published in 1975.

his same book, which has been constantly re-published, is now offered to the public, and serves as "catalogue" to the exhibition.
