ince our first meeting in New York in 1983, a deep friendship has been formed with Robert Hupka, rooted in the same irresistible pull towards Beauty.

uring this time, he has lived the adventure of the exhibition in close contact with us. For years, it is rare that a week has gone past without a phone call, and we have given him the news and feedback. He himself came over to Europe for all the important venues, such as Lourdes in 1990, Czestochowa, Paris, Vienna or Madrid.

he new exhibition presented in Lourdes, in the Sanctuary itself, along with the project for a foundation linked to it, was very dear to his heart.

his is why, although he was serious ill, he was determined to be present for the inauguration of the exhibition, on the 24th March 2001. Due for open heart surgery, he left hospital the previous Sunday, and was to return to hospital as soon as he got back to New York. He was to have to undergo not only the planned operation, but just eight days later, because of an accident, another operation to the brain.

e came out of the experience very weakened, and passed away most peacefully on 3rd July 2001.

t the exhibition's opening ceremony, "Lourdes Magazine" the Sanctuary's journal asked him: "To whom would you like to dedicate the exhibition of your photographs on show in Lourdes?" He replied: "I am 82 years old. This time I have come to pray in Lourdes in a wheelchair, plunging myself into the water of the pools with a childlike faith, wanting to be reborn into the true light. My desire is that all those who contemplate the pictures of the Pieta will enter into personal communion with the Living God".
